I've never driven one so maybe I wouldn't like it but a 69-72 rag top with side pipes just looks amazing !
I’ve driven a few from the mid 80s. They were ok. Like said above, they handle good but are not fast. They got way better closer to 1990. The 81 in my garage is not fast and doesn’t handle good either. It’s a weird driving experience at best. Would possibly be better if it was a manual transmission car but it has an auto to boot.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't the entire GM line loose HP after 1970?
My uncle had an original 68' 427 tri-power which proved to be an engine killer.
Not only were they difficult to tune and prone to weeping, but he went out of town for a week and it wouldn't start (it was his daily driver).
We bump started it (lived at the top of a hill) which bent a rod as one cylinder was full of fuel. In hindsight this was a very poor decision but didn't seem like it at the time.
After a stock rebuild, a Holley four barrel wouldn't allow hood clearance with the stock intake manifold and low profile hood cleaner.
He made spacers and the back of the hood was about 3/8" too high.
If it wasn't for the rod issue he would not have sold it nearly as quickly after the rebuild.
That stock 3 deuces set up is junk IMO.

Yes Jim compression ratios dropped beginning in 71 to get ready for unleaded fuels. The 3 deuces vette I think was produced from 66 to 69 was the reason ironically enough that the tri power was axed on the GTO. GM did not want the goat to steal the Corvettes thunder

I drove a buddies 65' Vette, back in the day and talk about a rattle trap and rough ride
OTOH, I really liked it except for the manual steering (back when I was in my 20's)
Jim the first one I ever drove was a 63 split window and I was just 16 , will never forget that one, what a thrill for a 16 year old

Ouch. You have definitely been an asset on the other forum and yours was the first thread I read when I made it over here. Honestly, you made the right choice. I’d dump my car, and everything I own, for my wife and kids. Everything else is just stuff

Btw. I know where there’s a C3 that’s probably for sale. The leaky one that lives next my Pontiac. Dad says he wants to sell.

Over my lifetime and 2 divorces, the cars stay and the women can be dumped. There is no guarantee that the wife or girlfriend will be a lifetime investment - and she can be replaced, and so can you. That rare car, or the one you built, cannot. I have more good memories with my cars than wives or girlfriends. Both the cars and women take money to upkeep, and in my book, it is the woman who is more of a money pit than the car. That gal will eventually get fat, old, and wrinkley. My car may get faded and parts worn out, but I can throw a paint job on it and replace parts by ordering them new - the old wrinkley wife can't be restored - but she can be replaced with a newer model. LOL I can't tell you the money I have spent in my lifetime on wives/girlfriends trying to make them happy just to get a piece of ass from them. Would have been cheaper to buy a rare collector car and an inflatable love doll to bang. Nope, would never give up or sell a favored car for a woman. Just my story and I'm sticking to it.

That’s what I would have expected too. Glad PJ made it over here. That being said, I stand by my original statement. My wife is a rare find to be sure. Last summer when I wrecked my junker class car, she was in tears. Not because of the car, but she felt bad that I lost it.

That 81 sounds very sad. Like seeing a delicious pie after dinner, and then being told that it's sugar free... Or your ex wife coming back around to return your tools, and then finding out that shes still alive.

FYI: Corvette C3 chassis suspension and brakes are the same from 62-82, and that car should handle like a magnet. However, the trailing arm job is about as much fun as cleaning your ass with a cheese grater... which despite my presentation is not as much fun as it sounds.

Yes all GM's peaked in 70... but it didnt translate uniformly across the board. The vette lost serious HP and compression in 71 and 72 much worse. However the GTO guys werent missing any performance with the new 455's (or so Im told), whereas the chevy 454 was a straight up dog.

Ive always found it interesting that government regs and gas were blamed for this decline, yet Mopar was just getting started with their best stuff in 1970... and 71 and 72 were the best they ever made. Or so it seems.

A 70 vete 350 was 350 hp, 71 was 270, 72 was 190 (if I recall)

@PontiacJim shouldve been an Indian (not the kind that work at Exxon, the Dances with Wolves kind) with his spot-on advice.

It's funny that my GF... while supporting the gto resto 100%, constantly comments at the substantial expense, but I can tell you...

As I sit here now doing the books for 2021, I couldve done a frame-off on the GTO and put the Tremec in it, for what I spent on food and alcohol this year, in order to keep the pooter from getting stuck in 1st

Well I sold the goat to cover some expenses and to get the wife a new wedding ring. I got a good price and it did go to a good home thankfully! I know I will probably never get another one. But having it for the last 13 years had some good memories! I chose this forum over the other one because of the members here is the ones that need to know 👍There might be a corvette in the future I hope

I sold my Camaro for my dog. Sold my truck 4 my kids. My wife will have to be happy with a farm. I could have bought 100 acres with just a metal lawn mower shed.

It killed me to give up mine back in the day and I went thirty years without cars but you do what you have to do for the greater good. I can find 20 plus nice goats for sale with the click of a button and get a loan and be driving one in no time, but there's only one beautiful house we built, two great kids and one amazing wife in the world for me that certainly aren't worth any car or any material thing in the world ! I'm sure it killed pontrc but he had to make a hard choice and made the right one, what is someone supposed to do ignore their bills their wife and kids needs so you can drive around in a muscle car? I just had a tenant call me yesterday who is falling on bad times and he had to sell his '70 Cuda that he has restored for the last few years, it was beautiful and he loved it. Yes my wife got a couple of rings over the past few years and I felt guilty spending so much of our money on my hobby which she hardly ever questions that when she fell in love with the newer Challengers I raided our IRA's and found her a used purple one she was dreaming about, just like have been dreaming about having a '65 so if I can have my dream why can't she have hers? To see her reaction on Christmas morning 3 years ago and her tell me she giggles still to this day driving it is worth more to me than any IRA....plus now I can get mine painted :D

It needs some love. It has somewhere around 60k on it and most on the suspension parts are original. My dad offered it to me about 6 months ago. I couldn’t take it since my only plan for it would be to dump it
