On Fretted instruments, yhes, you can mess up your intonation by not placing your finger in the right place or using hte correct amount of pressure. The size of the frets makes a difference here, too. A common rookie mistake is to press too hard in-between frets and pull things out of tune. This is more noticeable to my ear on a regular guitar, partly because most bass players use thick strings that prevents this to a degree. I use light strings, so I have to be more mindful of it.stupid question, i know shocker right? when fretting does the pitch change if not right behind the fret? for some reason i never noticed. for a time i could judge where i was by the taper of the neck. then i realized this and started screwing up. thinking too much instead of letting it flow.
Fretless you have to be very precise in terms of where you put your fingers because there's literally no wiggle room. On a fretted, with the right amount of pressure, your little micro-intonation flaws based on finger position aren't necessarily noticeable.
