I went looking last year for a modular analog synth equivalent to an Akai MPK mini keyboard and came up blank. I think the kid would love it but there's still some gap in "stuff that interests him" and "stuff that kids are willing to put up with to make noise". I think it still needs to make its own sounds

Yeah that does look like a near ideal "my first analog synth" for a kid who's dad wanted to be a real musician.

I guess i need to look for a compact keyboard amp that won't blow the budget or be too big (even though we all know a $100 KB100 would bd the best bet, they're huge)

An iPad with any number of freeware soft synths and headphones will sound way better than some Behringer carp, IMO and IME.

I'm just using a bluetooth speaker I got for Christmas. Anything will do.

I snagged this over the summer but I don't think I posted it here yet. It's the SB-1 Space Bee.

I do some work for the designer. I'm not much of a synth guy, but I got a Behringer knock-off last winter to practice with to figure out some of the less intuitive functions.

It's hard to express just how high-quality this thing feels. Sturdy aluminum chassis, tight tolerances, and a beautiful feel to all the keys, sliders, and knobs. Even has a built-in battery so I can play on the go. Hard to find anyting designed and built to these standards nowadays.

I've been trying to bash my way through the intro of Social Distortion's Story Of My Life:

Part of what I've struggled with on guitar is switching between strumming chords and picking riffs - this intro is structured in such a way that the chords are easy (G, A, D) with the little fills between each one being comprised of the component notes of the chord. I know this is probably Music Theory 101 but this is the first time I've actually put any thought into how to do this sort of thing.

I can't quite work out the proper tone either, with my electrics, but boy howdy does that little intro sound AMAZING on acoustic.
