Got a new digital mixer, mixing a bluegrass band at church today. Tonight my kid tells me "it sounded like a recording, but not in a good way."
After some digging i think he was saying I got little heavy on the compression. I don't think it was super obvious, just a few db, mostly 3-4:1 But bluegrass shouldn't SOUND processed would be a fair point..
The musicians some of the better ones noticed. but weren't complaining. It was a combination of trying to wrangle a mix of some talent with good voices but not a lot of mic experience, perhaps a bit of new toy factor, and trying to work with the signals i had.
But this kid is 11, doesn't play, he does appreciate Dad's music but doesn't have a lot of breadth of listening to draw from (and its not bluegrass). And he noticed. He didn't know how to put it in words but, dang. At first I thought he was just raggin in me, because he'll do that
We gotta get this kid trained!
