A bit of progress. Car is pretty crusty but seems to be solid where it matters. I’ve gutted out the interior and removed the lights and trim. I started paint work on a day with not rain in the forecast and we got a 20 minute shower which messed it up. I also installed a very cheap wing for dorky reasons. Total prep is going to be under $250 including the price of the car.

I bc still need to pop out the windows, chain the bumpers to the frame, the doors shut but only a little more work and it’s ready to go.

Rules dictate bumpers are chained to the frame. Doesn’t always keep them from coming off, but keeps them from flying off. Rules also dictate bumpers must be factory original, no push bars allowed. They don’t allow a lot of modifications to the cars. You can run a roll bar but it has to be inside the car. Doors are either chained or welded shut and an extra strap to hold the hood closed is recommended. Chaining the doors shut is way less work. You get black flagged if your hood pops open.

Similar and probably a holdover at this track. They used to run demo derbies there up until maybe 15 years ago. And I’m talking 100 cars at a time. They stopped it due to insurance reasons. Figure, most county fair derby’s are run in mud pits not on a paved 1/3 racetrack that has a paved figure 8 crossover in the infield. The speeds were just too high.

Realized no updates on the junker since the first weekend. I have the bumpers chained, a window net installed, and the numbering done. This weekend I’m going to seal the doors, pop out all the glass (except the windshield), and replace the coolant with water. Then it’s ready to roll on the 12th.

Car is ready to roll for next weekend. Moved it to flush out the coolant and replace with water and the brake pedal went to the floor. Replaced a blown line and bled the one corner. Pedal came right back up so good enough. Here’s hoping it holds together.

Backstory on the number 84. I’m reusing the number I ran on the first car. That one was painted with Super Mario graphics. I chose 84 because I thought that’s what year the original game was released. Found out after that it was released in 1983 but had already painted and registered the car as #84.

Ran the car last weekend. It did ok for what it is. It was entered in two events and took some damage in both. With how rotted the car is, it held up pretty good to a fairly good hit to the right rear door. Highlight of the day for me was passing a much slower car half on the infield grass. My younger son was impressed by that move.
