Ah ha.....I believe we may have reached the root of G&Ls issues. They probably have Doofus Dave McClaren programming CNC machines. 🤪

Yup.

I'm sure most have heard of the PLEK machine.
It scans your neck, fretboard, frets, amount of relief.
And gives you a readout of it all.
It tells you where frets are low, high, everything.

And it can level the frets, cut the nut, makes the bass/guitar incredibly playable.

However, it's up to the operator how to proceed from the initial readout.

You don't just put in a guitar with crummy playability, push a button, and out pops a fantastic playing instrument.


The machine/programming is only as good as the person operating it.

Yup it's an ash body Tribute. Just fine brother other than maybe dying from neglect. Just haven't played or jammed much at all this year. I'm hoping to correct that little problem now that I'm up here in Ft Collins. You should come over some day and we can jam a bit. The music room is ready for some action.

Good on G&L for preserving the legacy of Leo’s design. Oh wait, thats a Fender copy.

It’s interesting that everything G&L did in the 80s under Leo was a dramatic departure from his earlier work. Now most of their new stuff just copies what he did at Fender.

Some yes and some no. For the most part Leo seemed to stick with his former body shapes but maybe streamlined them more to reduce weight and get around being a dead ringer to the Fender version. The biggest changes came three areas; 1) MFD pickups, 2) PTB tone controls, and 3) the dual fulcrum tremolo bridge.

I think there was only so much he was willing to do as far as his guitar designs go. The Tele, the Strat, and the Jazzmaster were some of his biggest successes at Fender so he more or less adapted those or at least modernized them a bit. Who knows what ideas he had left over in his workshop and in his head when he finally passed away.

G&L claims the Espada design goes all the way back to his days at Fender and the body does bear a resemblance to something Fender built back then. So maybe the Doheny was another idea that was in Leo's head too. If nothing else surely the MDF version of the Jazzmaster pickups is pure Leo. He never gets as much credit for his pickup innovations as others do and he really should.
