    • SWR SM400 / SM500 and always with  a f”Deck HPF (as these amps don’t have any protection built in)
    • Ampeg SVT-IIP tube pre-amp / GK MBF800 as power amp – Unproven as it hasn’t been on a gig but kills at home
    • SVP-CL pre with Ampeg SVP1600 lead sled – Rehearsal rig and awesome on the gig but too heavy for bar jobs
    • Cabinets
    • GB 2×12 NeoX – 45 lbs., loud and clear; main gig cabinet; highly recommended
    • Bergantino HT322 – Love this cabinet but 100 lbs. and awkward to move alone
    • 2×15 loaded with Altec 421’s – Awesome tone but will not take a lot of power; great for rehearsal

I’d be remiss not to mention how much I love my SVT-CL; reference amp by which all others are judged; not enough clean power for a 2×12 though and 84lbs.

Totally not my area, as I’ve been a practice/combo amp guy since the beginning.

However, that GB 2×12″ Neo sounds like it’s right up my alley, even if I have no use for it.

My main amp is a lowly Acoustic B20. A 20 watt combo amp with a 12″ speaker.

I like the tone of it, as it feels like a nice balance between the tightness of a 10″, but the bottom of a 15″.

Was that enough of a TB answer 🙃

    • Home brew tube pre/power amp
    • Genzler Magellan 800
    • Mesa D800+ (until 2 weeks ago, anyway!)

    • Barefaced Super Twin
    • Genz Benz NEOX 212t (actually sounds better than the Barefaced, but the Barefaced is more readily portable in my car and still sounds really good)
    • That’s all I got (not considering the 30 or so cabs of days gone by)

I’ve primarily been a combo amp guy as well. Never played in venues that needed a huge rig. I use IEMs mostly now.

That being said, I really like my old Hartke 210 combo. But, I grew up playing a Kustom  250 with a 2-15 cab loaded with JBL D140’s.

My main sound is the SWR SM-400 amp sim through the Boss GT-1B at the moment. I also use a MarkBass sim sometimes.

Orange Terror Bass + Audiokinesis Hathor 1203

    Traynor YBA 200 + Barefaced Two10

Ashdown Little Stubby + Barefaced One10

Note: I don’t actually own the Orange Terror Bass yet, but I borrowed a friend’s and tried it with the Hathor and fell in love.  I’m just waiting for a good deal to coincide with my gear allowance 🙂

Very odd to hear the SWR SM400 come up twice, in such a small group. I have an SWR SM900 and SWR Triad, new in the box still from 1995. I don’t love it.

    • Ampeg V4B with an SVT 212 cab. (My home practice rig, and arguably favorite amp of all time. I have two SVT212 cabs, but I prefer one).
    • Ampeg Heritage SVT CL and Mesa Powerhouse 412. (My studio practice and gig rig and tied for best sounding of all time).
    • markbass SD1200 with and SWR Henry 8×8.

Best sounding amp I’ve ever owned was a V4B that I bought when I was 15 from the local classifieds. Cut a bunch of lawns for that one but it was probably $150 used then. The guy delivered it to my house. Kept that amp for at least 30 years and NEVER changed a tube (all original Magnavox tubes as I recall).  Best bass tone I ever got (and I was a recording engineer for many years ; 50 hours a week) was a V4B with a giant ballast resistor on the speaker side with pre amp straight into a Sony console. Just wasn’t enough clean power for an inefficient cabinet. I had it and the SVT-CL at the same time and knew I was taking a step back in tone but wanted the power. I bet I’ve had 20 amps over the last 40 years and I stupidly shipped that jewel to Canada eh’.  The one that got away…

I can hardly wait for Raunchy’s response to his top 3, as it seems he has owned at least 300 amp/cab combos.
