Yessir, it is. I hate to admit it in this G&L group, but that Sterling gets the most gig time. I love the tone and the feel of the neck. My L-1000 is a close 2nd, but that Sterling is awesome!

I miss my Sterling! I had a blue one with rosewood fretboard. It’s one of the few basses that I regret selling. It got a lot of gig time and always found a good spot in the mix.

Slight derail; How different is a Sterling to a SR other than the neck?

I’m guessing pretty close tone wise?

I am pretty bad at describing tone, but to me, the Sterling is less aggressive and doesn’t have as much of that “clicky” sound you get with the SR pickup.  I would choose my Sterling over Stingray every single time.

Hard to describe tone in words, but to me it seemed like the Sterling had more meat in the lower mids than the SR (even in parallel mode, which would be the “same” as a SR). The Sterling also has series and single coil mode. The Sterling pickup is different construction than the SR, with ceramic magnets and a dummy coil for hum free single coil mode. I understand Stingrays used to (always?) use alnico, but that might not be true any more.

I bought a used 83′ SR in about 1985 for $250. It’s a heavy beast but last year of Leo (as I understand it).   I bought 2 others as time went by. Really good players, 8.5 lbs. and very nice finishes. Ended up selling them both as it turns out I’ not a SR tone fan. Agree too much clanky high end. Just curious if there should be a Sterling on the bucket list.

That is a silly question.  Of course a Sterling should be on your bucket list.  Geez….

Standard SR 4-stringers have always used alnico. Once they revamped the SR into the SR special, the pickup was changed to neodymium. You can still get a new SR with an alnico pickup, if you go with an SR classic or old smoothie.

The SR5s, started off in ’87 I believe, and used an alnico pickup up until some time in the mid-’90s, when they switched to ceramic. It stayed that way until ’08, when they reverted back to using alnico.

I am sure I could go back and find it, but what color is it?

Dude totally sick! You should get a second MFD and route it right in between the other one and the bridge. Toss in a preamp so it can have that modern pre amplified type of a signal. Then you’re in business!

Did you get your Kilo yet fer crissakes?
