Hey gang! I thought you might like to check this out. I posted this in another thread but thought it deserved it’s own. My Uncle used to live in Boise in the ’80s. He had a local guy named John Bolin make him an acoustic guitar. Last year he gave it to me since he’s not into playing anymore.

I hadn’t heard of Bolin before so I did a little research. Turns out he still has a shop making high end guitars and basses. He has made instruments for some big name acts like ZZ Top as well as some designs for Gretsch I think. Pretty cool!

This one has a signed tag inside with #8 and my Uncle’s name on it.

Thanks Market! I would like to know more about it. Might reach out to Bolin to see what they say.

Can you tell what kind of wood the neck is made from by the headstock? The back looks the same

Beautiful guitar.  You have a very generous uncle.

The face plate and the scratch guard look like they could be rosewood but more often than not acoustic necks are made from mahogany.  The fret board appears to be ebony.

I could tell you more once I see it in person.

Thanks souly! I was wondering about rosewood on the neck and back but it looks a little more streaky than what I’m used to seeing. The neck is solid rather than a laminated face plate so I don’t think any mahogany is involved here. FB is definitely ebony.

FYI it’s at the Pickin Parlor now for repair, fret level, and a setup. Not sure what their turn time is but I’m not in a hurry.

Ask the guys up there about the wood.

The grain pattern on the headstock looks like rosewood and with a small custom builder he could use rosewood for his necks whereas the major manufacturers would not due to cost and scarcity.

    Is the body rosewood?

Might be. You can see through the sound hole that it’s sort of dark brown with wide black streaks. I’ll ask the guys at the shop and let you know what they say.

That’s a pretty serious stache that bad boy is sporting.

Id guess rosewood on the neck. Tough to say by a photo. I could see a bit of the walnut grain possibly too walnut would be a nice neck wood on an acoustic I think……..

hmmmmm leaning more towards walnut now even. Good call Andy

beautiful instrument to have as a family heirloom.
