Why would a guitar player hack bassist play an unlined board?

Ooooweeew. I dug the fretted five out. TMB 105 i stuck a bart on the bridge because i hate humming pickups. Its strung with Chrome flats. I'd been watch SBL's tone challenge

I'm not familiar with RATM - I mean I've heard the name but was never into em. But I love me some 90's bass tone. 80's guitar, 90's bass. I heard that and I have an HX Stomp for guitar so I went digging.

I'm playing this Headrush 108 at home and .. not a fan but I make it work. It can get good sounds but then I have to dial it all out when i plug into the board. Anyway, I had a patch thats basically just eq (mid scoop for the gk thing) and a compressor. I ended up setting a second compressor (that one is multiband) and it compresses the daylights out of anything below 200hz that dares poke above -12db. It does a great job of sounded full without farting the tiny 8 out. It can get loud enough to annoy my kid.

Its a bit more scooped than the fretless, but I dig. Grab a pick and slam the sucker. The flatwound B btw is awesome for shoves. I rarely hit below D but nondescriminant shoves are usually on the B. Actually works amazingly well.

I think I really should sell the 700rb/2xHartke112 stack at this point. I'll never play it out. It's kinda classic. I could use the floor space, and if I ever am playing bass, this will cover me.

Man I swear i thought I was a P-bass guy but i keep seeing stingrays everywhere i look. This is an ebay body, diy shellac finish. no harm. But I got to thinking about routing for a MM humbucker. I might be better served with a quarter pounder P in there. Being fretless it can probably eat all the sizzle you want to throw at it before it gets obnoxious.

Would a MM style humbucker in a precious cavity (obviously its bigger, but the P-route dictates far from the bridge it can be without a pickguard) get me closer to Stringray City? Is there a passive pickup that'll get it done, or is a preamp an absolute requirement?IMG_20250119_204745841~2.jpg

Pickup placement has a lot to do with the sound. I've had two Stingrays and the H H with the only the front PU on sounds more like a P bass than a single PU Stingray. Unless you really want to use the router, I'd get a MFD split PU (G&L SB 1)
do you think single vs double makes more difference?or the position more important? ive seen pick ups at an angle vs straight.

It probably makes sense to buy another body - the guy who built that one a couple years ago passed away, but it was basically some guy cnc'ing unfinished bodies out of his garage. I really don't like the toilet seat pickguards. The teardrop ray guards don't look bad but likely wouldn't fit the J body. I do got a laser but I'd have to use wood or acryllic - not anything vinyl. (Althought I could make a router template).

Ya know reversing the P would put it more or less in the MM spot - a ramp could cover that although I've been curious I've never played a ramp and not entirely sure I wouldn't hate it. I have a nice big block of ebony that was actually purchased for a ramp on this bass. (Sort of fingerboard all the way up to the pickup - but that never happened).

From listening to a couple - I do like the HH - it's likes a more aggressive P on the neck. But that also means I can probably find a P with more bite, or EQ it in.
You can. I've never been able to get a neck MM pickup to really sound like a P, despite coil switching and EQ, but you can get close enough that nobody will notice in a band setting. I could never get the mids to sound like a split P.

I have a single-humbucker Stingray and thought I'd try a Seymour Duncan Stingray pickup in my passive Maruszczyk, worked like a dream, much bigger sound than the narrow Bassculture 'bucker it replaced.

At that point you should just own up and buy a stick
Honestly, I had low expectations regarding his playing. I assumed wankfest. I was way wrong. When he came to pick it up he played this astonishing, beautiful piece that sounded like two musicians playing together. He sent me some recordings later. Really talented player.

The more I think about this the more the think the only pragmatic answer is a quarter pounder. Its not even a name pickup, some Amazon wonder. I'm not tied to Duncan but .. i think an SPB-3 is essentially what I'm shooting for

The more I look the Z body just has an elegance and function that looks so awesome. It doesn't look "futuristic" or evoke stars/v's/Thunderbird and other Gibson "screw style, we can make it any shape we want" at all, and to me feels like a well thought out design that Leo never built with that long strap horn, forearm bevel.

Changed it to a tobacco burst to show what I mean. I kinda wish it was a 5 now. But not bad enough to sell my fretless jazz neck. (Also the online builder refused to show a MM pickup in the correct location, so bridge is as close as I could get. Throw a pickguard on there and it could've rolled off the Fender line in 59-62

I think it would work. Just gotta measure the distance stingrays use, from the bridge. I can see it fitting, even if it's pretty much right next to the Precision pickup.

I was considering doing something similar to my P/J bass, turning it into a P/MM bass.

The stingray sound is my favorite tone to record with if I have the option. So I'm biased in its favour
