Hot one today. Was already almost 90 when I brought Tibi to the park before work. We did our usual hike and were chilling in the shade when she just wandered off. I figured she was either going to get water or leading me back to the car like "enough!"

But nah, this girl wanted to bake on the deadest, hottest grass.

I was too tired the other week to mention bringing my older cat Sparrow (17) to the pet ER after she peed blood over our whole upstairs.

They suspected a UTI so they wanted to draw blood and urine.

You know how these things go: we waited about 90min before they could get a team together to do the poking. I had Sparrow in the carrier with the lid open on my lap while I read a book. At some point I realized my thighs were wet but whatever, I was worried about my old girl.

It took a team of four to get the specimens. These being cool, smart women, I tried to break out the dad charm:

"I don't mean to brag, but I was able to obtain a urine sample all by myself while we were waiting." (Bow my head to look at the wet stripe across my legs.)

Sparrow's counts were well into kidney failure territory, but she also showed signs of dehydration, so the doc wanted to keep her overnight to replenish fluids, administer IV antibiotics, and retest her. I said sure, whipped out the plastic, and scratched Sparrow goodnight.

The next day the doc reported that Sparrow responded very well to the treatments, so they wanted to continue IV fluids/meds for another night. They sent an updated quote, and I closed my eyes and clicked "Yes." I dropped by at bedtime to keep Sparrow company for a bit. They gave us a room and Sparrow explored a bit, then asked for scritches, and then made herself comfortable in my lap. After about an hour she was asleep, so I gave her back to the vet and went home.

I picked her up in the morning and paid the final tab: $4k. That was gonna be our trip to Montreal for the grand prix next spring but whatever.

Since then we've switched from wet food once a day and dry food all day to wet food 3x/day. We're also running the tap for her whenever she asks.

My wife just got back from a follow-up appointment with our regular vet. Sparrow has gone from 3.8 lbs. at the ER two weeks ago to 4.5 lbs. today.

That's an 18% increase! Money well spent.
