Snowboarding yesterday was a bust. My daughter's autism puts up a major block to her doing anything where she isn't in control. It's fine--there are lots of things that she's very good at and lots of things we enjoy doing together. We didn't need this.

However, the dragon has awoken, and I have a bunch of shiny new gear that needs scratching up. So, sorry kids, daddy has a date with the mountains.

Meanwhile her brother got invited to a birthday party on a frozen pond (actually some tennis courts, maybe?). He's #93.

I'm headed to Snowy Range in Wyoming on Thursday. It's in the Medicine Bow forest about a 90 minute drive from here, north on Highway 287 to Laramie and then west. It's not a real high area for us on the front range, with a base at 8798 feet and the summit at 9663 feet, so the total drop is only about 1000 feet, although of course it's a much longer path when you ski down. (To compare, my favorite area Breckenridge is about 9600 feet in town and the biggest lift from town summits around 12,000 feet. It's a long run to get down!)

At my age, Snowy Range has many advantages: it's an easy drive with no heavy traffic (because it's the opposite direction from the big ski areas), my legs hold up better on the shorter runs there, and best of all, lift tickets are free when you're 70 or older! Free lift tickets and almost no traffic make the day better.
