"why today didn't suck."

Walked in to this card on my desk,

Respectfully blocking the names of the golf members.
Inside,

Another nice Mickey card.
And finally this heartfelt message,
View attachment 21859

This couple have been members for a long time.
Since coming back to the club, my interactions with them have become more frequent.
They are incredibly kind and gracious people, and always understanding of our challenges as a small staff.
Everytime I see them out on the course, they always smile and wave, and I do the same.
I knew they were out golfing today, and made a point to express my gratitude for their recognition.
It was probably one of the best moments in my career in turf management.
If I knew you were going to post the card, I wouldve written it neater.

Was chatting with the boss towards the end of the day.
I was about to walk out of his office, when he says "hey, wait".
Hands me a $100 gift card.
"You got team member of the month for December."
And adds "it's good to have you back. Really."

Totally unexpected.
3 months in and I get this.

I don't do what I do for that stuff.
I do what I do because I enjoy it.
Not always, with weather being a constant factor, but most of the time.

Hey, even if you don't to it "for that stuff," it still is a real compliment and should be enjoyed.

Well done, and congrats.
Thank you.
I know, and I get it.
The reason I said that is I'm not one to go, "oh man, I gotta step it up and be Superman so I can get EOTM!"
I just show up and do my thing.
That's why it actually caught me by surprise.
I've only been back at this course for 3 months.
The boss has a tendency to be very laconic,
So it can be hard to get a read on him.
WRT his view of my performance in my role, I just assume "no news is good news".
This award tells me I must be doing something right.

I'm embracing the positive during the dark times at work. Every day that I go in, instead of getting mad at the people around me, I make a mental note of what positives they bring to the table.

The one guy who calls out sick all the time? He's SO obsessed with perfection that if he's not feeling 100%, he's going to call in. If it's not worth doing 100%, it's not worth doing period.

Our grumpy head brewer? He's been literally around the world brewing beer. He's SO accomplished; the man literally brewed the beers that made me fall in love with craft beer. His frustrations/grumpiness are rooted in having the rug pulled out from under him - he was hired under the auspices that he was going to be empowered to take action and turn things around, then has been stymied at every single turn because the Corporate tier doesn't actually want changes.

Our Frat Bro that tells WILDLY inappropriate jokes all the time? He's got amazing energy - always going a mile a minute into whatever he does, from working to rec league golf to eating lunch. If we all could match his energy, we'd be unstoppable.

I know I've got my shortcomings, but I sincerely hope I'm viewed as adaptable and a valuable part of the company - through my training, through working with everyone at the brewery, I'm 95% confident that I could literally take a beer from grain to glass. I can 100% brew a beer, start to finish. The one blind spot in my knowledge is working the cellar, but that's not necessary for all of our beers...if we bypassed our filtering machines, I'm 100%there. I'm 100% confident in packaging (both kegs and cans), and in warehousing/shipping. I've even done accounting (AP and inventory) work in the office for a bit.

That's a great assessment of your co-workers. None of us are perfect, indeed. If you can appreciate their positives and keep from obsessing about their negatives, work can be pretty great.

And it sounds like you're gaining enough knowledge that new roles are in line for your future.

Like you, I’ve been trying to focus on the positives that each of my work team members brings to the table. I can do that easily for all but one of them. Sad thing is that one guy I truly like. We’ve hung out outside of work and have gone to cookouts at each other’s homes on weekends. As far as work goes, I’d fire him if I was the boss. He hasn’t worked a full 8 hour shift in years, he sleeps at his desk, and he seems incapable of doing his job. I do t trust any of his work and feel he opens the door for the company to face real liability for some of his mistakes. He was working on one thing this week. The assignment should have been done in one day. He worked on it for 4 and still hadn’t finished by the end of the day Friday. I’m torn. I personally like this guy a lot but the best thing that could happen for both parties is for his employment to end.

Bit of a rant, but I still don't hate my job.

I work on a golf course.
We have limited staff and equipment.
We do what we can with what we have.

We mow greens with a riding mower.
Went down on Monday, needs some parts.
One shows up, all good.
The other gets shipped to fuckin' California.
So, our Tues-Sat crew needs to learn how to walk mow, which is just one individual.
I train'em up on Friday, confident they'll git'r'done.

This morning starts, should be smooth.
Nope.
The one walk mower I grab won't stay running.
So, I throw an audible, and snag the kids mower, send him on a different mission, and proceed to walk mow the entire course (greens) with two people.
Haven't walk mowed in probably a year.

Definitely feeling it today.

shipping is getting ridiculous, the fed ex guy" timmy "can't seem to stop at my house. had to chase him down.
this was over three days of tracking him. it was out for delivery every time. he managed to stop across the street but
then drive back to fed ex. the dude was sitting a block away hiding.

caught him and got the package. another neighbor was done the same way. his truck is tracked no where to hide.
i think he learned this.

Think he was "milking it", to take extra time in the day?
(I'm kinda an expert, I thought of getting a Dairymans association sticker for my tool box)
