They've been eating over here while the neighbors were away for the weekend but today I went to check on the food status and saw Taz next door. So i went over with a bag of food and say hi.

Taz wasn't up for pets but was comfortable enough to groom himself within reach. Ghost as always was too skittish to eat while I was nearby but still came for moral support.View attachment 17924View attachment 17925
That ability is wasted on him since you had his nuts cut.

Glad to see this crew. HVAC went out. Six months out of work and I'm now looking at replacing an entire 3 ton system.

But anyway, a repairman left the crawlspace open. I didn't discover it until three days later. The gingers were easy to locate but Ms elusive Bandit stays hidden for days/weeks at a time (to think I once hoped she could be an outside pet).

Anyway all four ferals have been accounted for and nothing has hit the trap i left in the crawlspace so i think we're good. Pretty much everything hits on cat food so I think we're good.

Never been so relieved to see a stray cat as her showing up on camera.

We discovered scat mat. Unfortunately theres about one foot not covered on the far side but the idea was that cats can jump and possums/raccoons can't. Taz already hit the feeder and he ain't the brightest so it may work. Im now trying to find the smallest chunk I can find to finish out the back side and a way to tack it down that doesn't make a whole in the decking.

We left a landing strip so cats can jump on top, and hop down if they want to go inside. Theoretically anyways, who knows maybe they'll it use it if it stays possum free. I mean I know they can easily hop it if they can clear the jump, but I dunno if they need more LZ or not, or if they're game for a flying leap into the ports. Given the shyness of this crew I figured leaping into a dark hole is probably not in the cards.

Put out lotsa food to taunt the possums and see if they're deterred

FYI the plastic "scat mat" is just "scat". Doesn't work on possums. I saw him inside the perimeter and looked up the video (thats a conversion process since Frigate doesn't natively work with h265) to see if he was walking around or over. Jackass just walks right over it. Need to get back to training sooner or later.

Even if we don't do the alarm i may use it to control a servo to safe or trigger the trap. Either block food access or catch the offenders and leave the cats alone.

Lots and lots of raccoon visistors lately. We're putting the food up at night but it ain't stopping him. Also have a deer the neighbors have been feeding who's lost all human fear (was hit by a car, they're feeding her) - she hangs out in the yards in broad daylight now)

Our girl is still super shy but the boys have clued her in that the food is out during the daytime only. Ghost figured out the deadline and has started meeting me. I found a reclosable paste because our indoor gal is on a pill for a few days. The stuff is like crack - I showed my wife "watch this" and opened up the pill bottle and she came running. I figured if it's good that good it'd work on the boys, and sure enough Ghost let me pet him last night.

Tonight I heard a bump and checked the camera and they were laying up against the door. So I went out armed with a tube of churu and whadya know. Pets from both boys. Ghost is more timid but less people shy. Taz is more assertive but people shy. At first he was like "Woah buddy watch the hands! We're here for the churu." but decided that it was ok. He even offered to play slaps. (Dead giveaway that this was Taz)2024-07-07-the-boys.jpg

Ghost seems to be having 2nd thoughts about the feral life. But only when nobody else is around. Sorry buddy but my compassion draws the line at 50% of my income and half time with the kid . I did get a flea comb in his fur though and even got him some flea meds (his first time he gnawed through my welding gloves)

He acted like he was just going to walk inside when I opened the door. Sorry dude, but the ladies of the house wouldn't be too keen on that idea.

I rubbed a feral cat belly! And have all 10 fingers. Okay it wasn't lay on your back belly rub Iike a dog. But that's still a danged impressive level of trust. I think that's an official turn in your feral card event.

Also managed to get flea meds on both these rascals. Hope their poor momma doesn't starve herself since we're putting up the food at night. Don't have much hopes for her.

I'm debating putting up the footage because the raccoon needs to be "relocated". One of the boys was guarding the porch last night, Raccoon came up. They faced off - the cat stood stock still (no audio) but the raccoon was bobbing and weaving and expecting him to make a move. From the video I have I don't believe there was any contact but ... buying marshmallows today. They're still current on rabies vaccine. They only give ferals a 1 year shot (probably cost) but I'm going to start trying to recatch them in september and get them a 3 yr shot. Their momma too if I can catch her but ...I think we'll clean the woods of possums and raccoons before she sets foot in another trap.

Oh and I got a full on lay on your back belly rub today, thinking it was Ghost, when I see the other waltz in and I notice he's a half shade lighter and the ear clip is slightly different. I probably wouldn't have gone straight for a belly rub had I known it was Taz.

New visitor logged. And yet - strangely familiar. It's not "Slim" the chonker my neighbor has fed for years. One of the last things my wife said before bed was Tommy was going to have to go if he got on the table again. So I was relieved he hadn't been evicted during the night. But ... the boys seem okay with this cat - that doesn't prove paternity, just familiariarity -however I think this may be Dad. (Also upgrading from the $35 camera to a 4k one soon)

Pick up a couple scat mats and lay them on the table. After one or two times, he’ll stay off the table.

Hmm. Didn't work on the opossum but... my concern with Goofball is his has little body awareness. We claim him as a fellow aspie mostly in jest but he really does exhibit some sensory disconnect stuff. Like I'm constantly finding large clumps of hair with roots because i rolled over enough fur to pinch off a clump and he doesn't bother to yowl for 30 seconds.

Well their one year rabies vaccine was up in October. We were concerned about retrapping them but as it turns out these are basically just independent fiesty outside pets.

Taz is the more mistrustful. He escaped twice and Ghost once. They had torn a big hole in the screen and I didnt see it. Despite being "trapped" He was waiting for churu the next morning. I left him in the trap and idjit squeezed his body out through a 1" gap. His brother got the trap zip tied shut. Recaught Taz a third time Sunday morning with two hours to spare. All three times I basically hand loaded them into the trap. Want some candy kid? In you go.

When we released them, ghost wheeled around to stare in the storm door at the warm, safe house. After getting trapped multiple times in one weekend i figured they'd high tail it and i wouldn't see them for a month or two.

These days I go a week or two without seeing them since my neighbor feeds them, but they remember old times. I even stepped on Ghosts tail the other day and after letting me know, he was still my buddy.

I stuck a cat toy on a swivel and put it on a kid's fishing rod and we go catfishing every now and then.

Bandit... she apparently moved up the road. Last sighting was a couple months ago by a neighbor.

At least I hope I haven't seen her... There was a cat who got hit up the road. Didnt get a good look and I think it was a tad far away from "home base", but its possible. Would love to catch her on camera but we don't feed at night.

Oh yeah - forgot about this but .. I was getting a steady stream of emails from youtube saying people from India were subscribing to my channel. I figured it was some sort of channel stat scam/inflation or possibly phishing but I couldn't figure it out. Then one day I saw that I had like 100 subscribers and 17k views and apparently the algorithm had picked up Taz and the Racoon facing off.

About this time the neighbor lady told me that her dogs were barking at something and wouldn't go up the driveway. I went out later that afternoon and Mr Racoon was in the Tom Shelter at 4pm. Broad daylight on my porch. I got a couple blows in with a walking stick I keep by the door, but despite some solid whacks he ran off. Had we not been on the way to the library he'd a got a quarter oz of plumbum to his cranium. He returned with 3 buddies a few days later. It was too close to trap day to risk scaring the boys, but still far too long to try to contain the wiley screen shredders on my porch, so I couldn't really set out the trap at night. Racoon on the porch in broad daylight just signed his death warrant though, but I haven't seen him since (but the camera has been down too)

They're all good to go on shots now, and as it turns out - not at all trap shy if goodies (and maybe some pets) are involved.
