Trying not to buy one of the new Schecter 12-string basses that I wouldn't have time to play, but this video is not helping:

(Not a Schecter, but probably not too different based on the Schecters I've heard.)

I love 12 String basses, and when you're alone, they're even more fun!! But, the Schecters used to be ugly? Ill go look

Just finished up a major revamping of this Marco Bass:

View attachment 20989

Rolled the fingerboard edges, shaved down the upper horn a bit, and then did a trick new onboard preamp build with separate EQ for each pickup and an active mixer section. Neck pickup gets Bass/Mid controls, bridge gets a resonant LPF ("filter preamp") with a Q-switch. Volume controls are unity gain at noon, allowing many more boost/cut options than most commercial jobs can manage gracefully. In practice this means I can just tweak the bridge volume for soloing and /or slide work and go back to the "normal" sound in a heartbeat, since both volume pots are detented. Plenty of output to run directly into a line level FOH mixer for open mics and the like too, which is a very nice bonus.
It ain't broke, let's fix it anyway! My luthier buddy gave me a spare fire damaged body, which has been drying out for a couple of years now after his shop fire. Using that would allow a do over on the control layout, and hopefully a nice natural hippie sammich look, since I'm not big on burst finishes at all. The top is pretty nicely figured ash, and I've already managed to remove all the blistered parts of the finish to allow checking for structural integrity. It's a go, and the horns will get a bit different reshape this time around as well. Lots more hand sanding to go, but there some bare wood just starting to show here and there. This is a 'shopped mockup of the basic shape revisions I have in mind:

And WTH, there's always Krylon flat black as a fallback! :devilish:

It's not warped at all, is it? I suppose even if it was you could plane it flat again, but it might be a hassle.
Nah, it's a five piece glueup with grain orientation swapping and the actual heat damage only seems to have hit the shellac-ish finish. Not sure how wet this piece got, but water damage from the fire fighters was about half the total hit insurance wise. Marco's been burning duff bodies in his wood stove lately, and this model is discontinued anyway, so he just went through 4-5 bodies and picked this one as the best of what's left. If nothing else, this could be a good test of the whole solidbody tonewood debate, I reckon. The bass as-is sounds so frickin' good that throwing another 30-40 hours of hand work at it wouldn't really faze me, but hopefully it won't take quite that long.

Thinking about selling the ministack (700rbii/2x Hartke hd112's) Not a Real Bass Player, don't need a 212 stack, its 20" of wall space in the bonus room. Main thing keeping it here is not wanting to be insulted.

Putting effort into my bass playing seems like a useful thing but honestly I'm a guitar player thru and thru. Keep a bass and record direct seems the practical thing to do

That's a lot of rig for a non gigging player!

The bass rig I used to gig with works very well for acoustic guitar and vocals too, and I just might still want to do a few gigs on bass again someday, although doing some on guitar actually is a lot more appealing to me by now. I have zero interest in recording at the moment, but never say never.
