Anyone watch the Olympics opening?

I got a kick out of the beheaded Marie Antoinette bit and the pyro along the historic building illuminating all the copies of it.

The metal band that played during the opening (never heard of them) was inaudilble over the background noise, so they made an effective visual add=-on and I didn't have to listen to them. I liked that too.

And the lady singing opera on the "ship" that was pulled past the building was very cool. Great voice, nice visual.

The French certainly are willing to go their own way and own it. I admire that. I thought that overall the opening was among the best I've ever seen.

I also thought it cool that they only built one new event building for the Olympics. That's a great idea, as too many cities spend millions on buildings they have little use for after the event.

I thought it was great. The French are also brilliant in understanding artistic history in a way that the general USA cannot grasp. This is evidenced in the uproar over the ‘last supper’ scene, which was actually a depiction of Greek mythology.

But yeah, Gojira fucking crushed it.

Not sure why NBC is trying to turn Snoop into everyone's favorite uncle. He's, shall I say, an acquired taste, and I haven't acquired it yet.

He's a cultural phenomenon.

In addition to his recognizability, he's also mastered the art of "act like you've been here before."

On another level, in a scene like hip-hop where authenticity and credibility are everything, he's a hip-hopper whose brand is literally selling out. No matter where he goes, what he does, or with whom, he somehow manages to never let his fans feel betrayed. In fact, many enjoy living vicariously through him.

He's part icon, part ambassador, part audience proxy, and (although not to everyone obviously) quite an entertainer.

So yeah, I get it.

I'm a 59 year old boomer, relatively moderate, traditional country music fan, living in a conservative rural gold mining foothill town, and I really like Snoop. I know little about his music, but I like him.
When he gets on The Voice as a judge/coach later this year I think you’ll see a deep knowledge and love of many styles, which quite a few rappers seem to have.

I believe it comes from their insatiable quest to craft that perfect beat, requiring them to listen to untold hours of music to find small snippets and sounds from across the musical spectrum in that pursuit

On a personal note, Doggystyle was a coming-of-age album for me along with Rancid (eponymous), Rage Against the Machine (eponymous), and Nevermind. I spent my teenage years torn between two worlds from growing up in a city and eventually winding up in high school in the 'burbs. Black kids questioned my taste in hip-hop records and white kids teased me for listening to "rap" altogether. So when I defend Snoop, I'm kinda sticking up for myself.

Music moved on, as it always has and always will. My tastes exploded in every direction, forward/backward in time, and across genre and geography. But going back to that '92-'93 era, Snoop/Dre and Wu-Tang are the pinnacle of a movement that had no shortage of message, talent, and creativity; Rancid perfected fast, danceable, poetic punk; Rage articulated justified anger with unrivaled immediacy and weight; and Nirvana extracted everything that made rock great in the 60s and gift wrapped it for a generation of angsty kids, whom rock and roll may have completely bypassed otherwise.

There are lots of other stories/perspectives, but that's mine, and that's all.
